If you’re a regular on styleathome.com, then I’m sure you know about our amazing Cookie Swap Contest. If you’re new here, I’ll give you the scoop: Simply submit an original recipe and original photo of your favourite holiday cookie and you’ll be entered for a chance to win a KitchenAid stand mixer. We’ve already started publishing the amazing recipes we’ve received. You can check out all the entries here. But the contest doesn’t close until 5pm EST today so there’s still time to throw your hat into the ring! (Don’t forget to read the full contest rules.)

Ever since we launched this contest, I’ve been itching to get baking! So even though I can’t enter the contest, you’ve all inspired me to get into the kitchen and whip up some holiday treats. Here’s a quick look at what I baked this weekend:

shortbread cookies 4 great christmas cookiesThis classic shortbread cookie was easy to make but a bit time consuming; after cutting the cookies out with a cookie cutter, the dough had to be frozen for about an hour. Also, a friend told me that ‘real Scottish shortbread’ is made with rice flour but none of the recipes I found called for rice flour. How do you make your shortbread? With or without rice flour?

chocolate glitter balls 4 great christmas cookiesThese Chocolate Glitter Balls combine two of my favourite things: chocolate and almonds. The batter can get a bit sticky to work with if it gets too warm but is easier to handle once it’s rolled in coarse sugar.

chocolate thumbprint cookies 4 great christmas cookiesThis was my first attempt at making Chocolate Thumbprints and they turned out pretty nicely! You have to remove the cookies from the oven when they’re half-baked and make an indentation in the middle for the chocolate. It’s handy to keep a bowl of water nearby to cool your thumb down – the cookies are hot!

chewy chocolate chip cookies 4 great christmas cookiesThese chewy chocolate chip cookies are a regular on my cookie roster. But everyone seems to love them so why not make them for Christmas? In order to make them chewy, I omit the shortening and increase the butter to a full cup and add 2 3/4 cups of flour instead of 2 cups. Yum!
